The 34 year-old started his career with America MG in 1997, before moving to Atletico Mineiro where he stayed for two years.

In 2002 Silva left for Europe to play for Arsenal where he stayed for six years.  At Arsenal Silva was in the prime of his career. In six years he won five trophies: one Premier league title (2003-2004), two FA Cups (2003 and 2005) and two Community Shields (2002 and 2004).

Several years without trophies at Arsenal, combined with a lack of playing time led to Silva’s decision to leave Arsenal for Greece. “Wenger made me feel totally useless,” he once said. He played three years with Panathinaikos and managed to win both the Greek Championship and Cup.

Yesterday, Gilberto Silva signed an 18-month deal with Gremio, ending his 11 year European career.

“We are very happy with this contract,” said Gremio’s president, Paulo Odone. “And our goal is to reinforce the team even more in order to be extremely competitive in the Brazilian championship.”
