The 26-year-old is on his way out at the German side, and although he has said he would prefer to play in England, he has not ruled out a return to Brazil. Now, Peixe are hoping to secure his signature, with Diego having started his career at the club in 2002.

“He was born here and was a champion here,” said Santos coach Muricy Ramalho. “He feels the shirt and the supporters. This is good and important. We hope that we can make a deal.”

Ramalho also hopes to add out-of-contract midfielder Ze Roberto, who most recently played for Hamburg, and Cleiton Xavier of Metalist Kharkiv.

“If we are going to bring in new players, it has to be ones of this level,” added Ramalho. “We can’t forget that the Brasileirão is a long championship which requires a strong squad, and we also have the Club World Cup in December.”
