The two sides played out a 0-0 draw, and although Bastos could have scored for Lyon on two occasions, he was still voted man of the match and was satisfied with the result on his return to the Netherlands.

Speaking to UEFA.com, the 28-year-old said: “I could have done better because I had two chances to score, but it’s good to be voted man of the match. We played well against a good Ajax side and a point here is very welcome.

“It was very special for me to play in the Netherlands again,” he continued. “I started my career here ten years ago with Excelsior and Feyenoord, so it’s always nice to return.”

Bastos was strongly linked with a move to Juventus over the summer, but ultimately remained with Lyon and is likely to be a key player for them this term. He has played ten times for Brazil, scoring one goal in the process.
