The away side took the lead on the eighth minute when Julio Cesar had his free-kick deflected and Santos keeper Rafael couldn’t stop it from going in.

Figueirense hadn’t won in five games coming into this match but were playing with confidence against a Santos team who beat Corinthians 3-1 last week. Neymar was suspended for the match and it seemed to have a big effect for Teixe, who struggled to get the ball out wide in the opening stages.

One player who was playing though was Borges, who after his recent call-up to the Brazil squad for the Argentina match, was looking to do all the work on his own. He grabbed the equaliser on the 24th minute.

He was able to control the ball well before unleashing a fierce half-volley into the corner of the net from outside the area to make up for the home side’s poor start.

It would be fair to say Santos got too excited by equalising and two minutes later they fell behind once again. Terrible defending by Santos as their high line meant it was easy for Wellington to get a clear run on goal and finish easily to put the away side back in front.

Santos continued to press and Borges could have got his second ten minutes until half-time when Alan Kardec slid him through but goalkeeper Ricardo saved from point-blank range.

Santos did go into the break level though as in first-half stoppage time, Phillip Anderson put the ball across the area for Leo who finished brilliantly into the far corner and make the half-time team talk easier for Muricy Ramalho.

After the break, Borges had two great chances to seal the victory for Santos but he was unable to add to his tally.

Instead the side from Santa Catarina snatched a late win seven minutes from time when Julio Cesar added his second of the night in what was an impressive performance from him. From the penalty spot, he sent the ball low and hard into the corner and made sure the long journey back would be a happy one for the travelling support.
