-Chico, how were the early stages of your progression to becoming a footballer?

I started like any child, I started playing at school. I failed some trials, before I was eventually succesful at Grêmio, but I had no accommodation there for me. I then trialed with Atletico-PR, which I passed but was later dismissed, before I did another test at the PSTC (Football Training Center of Paraná) and returned to Atletico-PR anyway!

-How was your adaptation at Atlético-PR?

In 2002, it was difficult. i had left home, I missed my parents and was dismissed by the club. Second time around, I was there with five friends from the PSTC, so I was much happier.

-What was your most memorable moment in an Atlético shirt?

In 2009, when we won the Campeonato Paranaense. We had a very difficult season in 2008 and the following year we won the title. The supporters partying was great.

-After five seasons there, you moved to Palmeiras. How did you find your arrival in one of the four major clubs in São Paulo?

Here, the press and the fans are totally different. The pressure is higher, but the visibility of the Palmeiras in world football is completely different from at Atlético-PR. The adaptation was a bit tricky and in the squad, I only knew Danilo (now at Udinese-ITA). Today, I’m more at home and integrated.

-It’s been a while since Palmeiras won a major title. Do you think the pressure of the crowd disrupts the team?

It disturbs us a little, but it is not something that directly influences the team. Those playing at a great side as Palmeiras have to learn to deal with that pressure. It has been a long time since Palmeiras won a title. It is worse because São Paulo, Corinthians and Santos have had recent achievements. Santos were champions of the Libertadores and will play the Club World Cup. This all is the head of the fans, who then pressure the team.

-How is it to play alongside an idol, such as the goalkeeper Marcos?

It’s a dream I am currently living. He is not only a great footballer, but also as a great person. He treats everyone the same way at the club. It is a pleasure to live alongside him every day.

-And how is the group’s relationship with Scolari?

The group is close to him; it was him who formed this team. We are experiencing some difficulties, but we can still make a comeback.

-A few months ago you were rumoured to be considered by AC Milan. Did you receive any contact from the club?

There was some contact. Milan were after a new volante (defensive midfielder) and came to some of my games to watch me. But, we did not get as far as anything concrete.

-Your contract with Palmeiras will expire at the end of next year. Do you want to remain at the club, or go to European football?

A year is a long time in football. Earlier this year, I had not been given many opportunities, but now I’m doing well. i also dream of playing in Europe, but I’m happy at Palmeiras. If the board want me to sit down and renew my contract, I will listen for sure.

-Do you have a preferred country in Europe?

I really like Spain, France and Italy. I think my game is most suited to the characteristics of Italian football though. The most important thing is to pick a team with tradition

and structure.

-Do you dream of a call-up for the Brazilian team?

Every player dreams of this. Here at Palmeiras, visibility is much greater. I know it will be very difficult though, because the players in my position are very good. But, I believe and hope that one day I will receive this call.

-What can fans expect from Chico and Palmeiras in the remainder of the season?

You can expect a lot of desire. The team has been playing the whole year in this same way and that is not going to change now. I ask the fans to have a little more patience and believe in our work, as it is easier with them on our side.
