Cagliari forward Thiago Ribeiro could be set to make a quick return to Brazilian football, after growing homesick during his time in Italy.

Thiago, 26, has been heavily linked with a move to former-side Cruzeiro, with Palmeiras amongst other known admirers.

Whilst Catania retain the option to purchase the player’s economic rights, Thiago has made clear his intention to return to Brazil and the club are unlikely to stand in the way.

“Football and life are very different in Italy,” Thiago told Globo Esporte. “Although fans of Cagliari are great and very passionate, I miss the Brazilian crowds and above all, I miss my friends and family.

“I hope to return to Brazil, mainly to be near my daughter. The distance is too much. I only see her twice a year and this is not right.

“She is only two years old and it is great to live with a child growing up. I want to be around. As I cannot take her to Italy, I have come back to Brazil, but I am waiting on Cagliari.

Whilst Thiago’s rights are majority owned by agent Juan Figer, via Uruguayan side Rentistas, Cruzeiro are still in pole position to repatriate their former player.

The striker, who admitted that he would return to any club in Brazilian football, did though give some hope to fans of La Raposa.

“I know the club very well from the three years I played there, and I cherish every moment,” Thiago continued.

“No doubt, I would be very happy to return, but at the moment my priority is to return to Brazil, not necessarily there. The choice depends not only on me.

“Cruzeiro can hold hope for my return. The club has already expressed an interest in signing me and I have great affection for the institution and the fans. The possibility is there, but let’s wait and see.”
