Douglas, 24, qualified for Netherlands through naturalisation having lived in the country since joining FC Twente in 2007.

After completing his residency period and application in 2011, Douglas told the FC Twente website: “I am very glad to have gained Dutch nationality. I really feel like a Dutchman. I wanted this for quite a long time and I’m pleased that I now share a nationality with my girlfriend and daughter.

“I already dreamed of playing for Netherlands during the 2010 World Cup and that dream still stands. Team manager Hans Jorritsma has congratulated me on behalf of head coach Bert van Marwijk.”

The Brazilian could make his debut for the Oranje against Andorra in World Cup qualifying this Friday.

It is thought that the player came close to completing a transfer to Newcastle United earlier this summer after long-standing interest from the Magpies. However, the two parties were unable to agree on a suitable fee for his services.
