Veteran midfielder Juninho Pernambucano is one of three players who are set to be judged by the Brazilian Sporting Justice Tribunal (STJD) following a failure to comply with drug testing regulations.

Juninho, 37, will be joined by Santos full-back Juan and Fluminense goalkeeper Ricardo Berna, all of whom returned to their side’s changing-room before attending post-match doping controls, violating the required controlled conditions.

The former Lyon player’s case is to be heard on Friday at approximately 14.00, with the incident relating to Vasco’s fixture with Ponte Preta on 12 September. Ricardo Berna will be judged at the same time, whilst Juan will face the tribunal this afternoon.

The players will face charges under Articles 2.3 and 2.5 of the World Anti-Doping code which refer to ‘refusal or escaping collection’ and ‘attempting to change any component of the control’. If found guilty, they could face bans of up to two years from the STJD (Sporting Justice Tribunal).

Besides that possibility, they will also be accused of breaking Article 258 of the Code of Brazilian Sports Justice, ‘conduct contrary to the ethics of sport’ for which a ban of six matches is possible.

The three clubs also face changes of ‘failing to comply with a legal obligation’ for which they could face a hefty fine of up to R$100,000 if found to be complicit in a missed test.
