Corinthians strikers Paolo Guerrero and Juan Manuel Martínez say their team are ignoring the current plight of city rivals Palmerias and are concentrating soley on themsleves and their own form. The Timão face Bahia this weekend and the team from Salvador are one of the teams, along with Palmerias, fighting to stay up.

Guerrero, 28, moved to Corinthians earlier this year after 6 years in Germany with Hamburg SV, and the forward said: “I think it’s important game for Corinthians against Bahia, despite being in the middle of the table, and only interested in winning.’s An important game to keep pace and gain confidence for the World Cup. We have to get three points.”

His Argentine teammate Martinez backed these words and even went as far to say that the rivalry is similar to that of Boca Juniors and River Plate.

“It is difficult for all teams, all have mathematical chances to save themselves from relegation and will play with heart. We do not think of Palmeiras, just Corinthians and only ever the win for Corinthians.

“In Argentina it never happened to me a situation like this, but if you have the opportunity to be champions, Boca or River, and then the teams have to win both, and here is the same with Corinthians and Palmeiras. Whenever I think of the best, I think just for Corinthians, so we have to win without help or do not think of Palmeiras.”
