Palmeiras captain Marcos Assunção has confirmed his intention to stay at the club if they fail to stay in the Brasileirão this season. The verteran has also criticised the club for sacking coach Luiz Felipe Scolari.
The former Real Betis and Roma star is still an influential player for Palmeiras, despite his advancing years, and told TV Bandeirantes that if they were to be relegated this season, then he would stick around to help them get back to where they belong.
He said: “If we fall, then yes I will continue playing and will make Palmeiras get back to where they never should have left.
“For us players it is not in the mind that we will not remain [in Serie A]. We know the difficulties, but we have no choice. Other people will not do for us what we have to do."
The 36-year-old also spoke about the decision to release Scolari earlier this season.
“Scolari was not blameless. He is a great coach, a great person and I had a very good friendship with him. But it is easier for you to sack the coach than 30 players. It is unfair. So I do not want to be a coach one day," he added.
