Palmeiras skipper Marcos Assunção still believes his side can escape relegation this season, despite, with just four games remaining, being seven points behind Bahia, the first team out of the relegation zone, and three behind Sport, who sit 17th.

Regardless of their situation though, Assunção still believes in salvation and promises to fight to the end.

He told Lancenet: “The group is united and closed. We’re all in this together.

“We have to be together. Let stand until the end.”

On Sunday the draw against Botafogo saw a revolt from the crowd, including death threats aimed at the club’s president Arnaldo Tirone. The former Betis star understands their anger, but condemns the fans use of violence.

“I understand the boredom, nervousness because the situation is not good, but while there are minimal chances, we have to be together. This is no time for violence, this is not the way. I think the team played well, fought, battled, created chances but could not score. I completely understand the annoyance, but violence is only bad for Palmeiras.”
