Fluminense centre-back Gum has told reporters that he remains hopeful of winning the award for the best centre-back in the Brazilian championship 2013.

Gum, 26, has enjoyed a strong season with the Tricolor Carioca and admits that the chance of adding individual honour to the side"s impending league title is playing on his mind.

“The objective is not only to be champion, but to have the meanest defence and to be the best centre-back in the championship," Gum told Lancenet. “We must take all the prizes we can."

Although he himself was responsible for the goal conceded in a 1-1 draw with São Paulo last weekend, the centre-back revealed that he was comforted by the support of the club"s fans on the journey home.

He recounted: “At the airport [after the club"s game in São Paulo last Sunday] fans came to take pictures and they told me: ‘You are the best defender in the league, it was just luck and the fans wont be angry. We shouted your name out there, we trust you". This support has helped us to the great season we have had."

Coach Abel Braga also downplayed the defender"s error of judgement, telling a press conference of his support for the player:

“Gum, like Rafael Toloi [of São Paulo], made a mistake. But, both are having a great Brasileiro. He is one of the best players in the league and has the confidence of everyone at the club."
