Former Corinthians midfielder and club legend Basílio thinks that current midfielders Ralf and Paulinho will be the decisive figures if the Timão are to be successful at the Fifa Club World Cup in Japan this December.

Basílio, 63, gained the nickname ‘Angel Foot’ while a player with Corinthians, as he scored the winning goal to clinch the 1977 Paulista Championship, ending 23 years without a trophy for the club, and the legend identifies Ralf and Paulinho as potential heroes this time.

He told Lancenet!: “The player who scores the goal of the title will go down in history, as Emerson did (with two goals in the final of the Libertadores).

“I’m rooting for it to be Ralf or Paulinho, because they are the two who have been there and seen the change from the team in the fall the year before(Libertadores in 2011), a team that was in formation.

“They are two selfless players, who were not ashamed to stop a dribble, to miss scoring. They have sacrificed their goals for their teammates.”

And Basílio believes that winning the Libertadores has changed the opinion of Corinthians, much like winning the Paulista did back in 1977.

“My generation went 23 years without a victory, and we live as a routine of jokes for many years. After the Libertadores, it was the same, and the title has softened opinions. Corinthians has now become a club that is admired and this team is going to compete for the World title. Corinthians know and trust the responsibility of these professionals.”
