New Atlético Mineiro signing Gilberto Silva was given a heroes welcome as he landed at Tancredo Neves International Airport in Belo Horizonte on Sunday.

Silva, 36, is an idol at Atlético, after his spell with the club from 2000 to 2002 before leaving to join Arsenal, and will re-join his former club in January from Grêmio.

And despite his age, the World Cup winner is excited to lend his experience to Cuca’s side.

“I hope I can help Atlético in the best way possible,” Gilberto is quoted as saying by Terra.

“With my experience, I can help the group in everyday life, not just on the pitch. I will assume that position in a quiet way, respecting all.”

The former Arsenal midfielder, who won one league title and two FA Cups with the gunners, is Atlético’s first signing of the season as they prepare to challenge for the Campeonato Mineiro, Copa Libertadores and the Brasileirão.
