Chelsea defender Gary Cahill has admitted he deserved to be sent off for the foul he committed on Corinthians’ Emerson during the Club World Cup final, but has slammed the Brazilian for his reaction.

The Blues lost the showpiece final 1-0 to the Brazilian outfit following a second half header from Paolo Guerrero.

Cahill was shown a straight red after kicking out at Emerson and the England defender has admitted frustration got the better of him, but only after being provoked beforehand.

The 26-year-old said: “He lashed out with his arm and hit me in the face.

“Someone’s smashed me in the face but I didn’t roll around on the floor for five minutes holding my head.

“I got up, reacted and tapped him in the shin. He felt the need to go down, roll around on the floor for about five times holding his face.

“It probably is a red card but the reaction of the guy is totally out of order for what I did if you see the impact.

“It wouldn’t have been enough to knock over my one-year-old daughter.”

FIFA confirmed shortly after the game in Japan that Cahill will be issued with a one-match ban.

The centre-back will subsequently miss his side’s return to domestic action when they face Leeds United in the Capital One Cup quarter-final on Wednesday evening.
