Renato Augusto has become Corinthians’ first official signing for the 2013 season, after Bundesliga giants Bayer Leverkusen confirmed his departure on Thursday afternoon.

Renato, 24, has spent four seasons and a half seasons with Leverkusen since joining on a deal estimated at €10 million in 2008 but will link up with his new side from January 1 on a four-year contract.

The Brazil international, though, has struggled for game time this season after sustaining a series of injuries and will now return to his homeland in a deal estimated at €3.5 million for 50% of his economic rights.

“Renato gave us many great moments in his time hear at Leverkusen,” sporting director Rudi Voller told the club’s official website.

“Even though the last few months were difficult due to the various injuries he suffered, we appreciate the memories. He played an important role in the positive development of our club.”

Director Wolfgang Holzhäuser echoed those sentiments and added that he hoped the move back to Brazilian football could help Renato achieve his aim of playing for his country once more.
