Corinthians took a big step closer to signing defender Gil on Monday afternoon as Le 10 Sport in France report that Valenciennes have accepted an improved bid for the player.

Gil, 25, had initially been the subject of a €3 million bid from Corinthians, following the news that the Ligue 1 side would consider offers for their homesick star. However, that was rejected by the Valenciennes board who were asking for a figure closer to €4 million.

The defender, who is currently in Brazil on holiday, will undergo medical examinations in the coming days before putting pen-to-paper on a deal with the São Paulo side.

Corinthians have already announced the capture of Bayer Leverkusen midfielder Renato Augusto ahead of the 2013 season, while Corinthians striker Alexandre Pato is set to follow in the coming days.

Gil will be replaced at Valenciennes by Lindsay Rose, a 20-year-old centre-back who arrives from Laval. The Brazilian had moved to Ligue 1 in July 2011, having impressed at Série A giants Cruzeiro.
