As reported by Sambafoot on Wednesday, former Lyon and Galatasaray defender Cris has arrived in Porto Alegre and is undergoing medical tests ahead of a move to Grêmio.

Cris, 35, arrives at the Gaucho side as they look to prepare for a Copa Libertadores campaign in 2013 and will replace the recently departed Gilberto Silva.

Coach Vanderlei Luxemburgo is believed to have requested the signing of the defender, having felt the need for an experienced head to lead the defensive line. The player was released from his Galatasaray contract on Wednesday to allow for a move.

Indeed, Gilberto Silva’s arrival leaves Grêmio with a wealth of experience across the side, with Zé Roberto, Elano and Dida also veterans of the Brazilian league.

Cris could complete his transfer later on Thursday and join up with his new team-mates, who return for pre-season training at the Estádio Olímpico later in the day.
