Veteran midfielder Marcos Assunção has announced he will not be renewing his contract with Palmeiras.

The 36-year-old, who made 146 appearances and scored 31 goals during a two year spell, has been unable to reach a new agreement with the Alviverde after his contract expired in December.

The ex-captain is the 22nd player to the leave the club following Palmeiras’ disastrous relegation to Série B last season.

Assunção is expected to hold a press conference on Monday to explain his latest decision, which leaves the defensive midfielder seeking a new club for the forthcoming season.

Ely Coimbra, his agent, told Lance!: “It is already set, he does not play for Palmeiras anymore.

“We will hold the conference so that you know everything. We will explain everything that happened.”

Palmeiras were desperate to keep the former Villarreal star next season as the club attempt to compete in the Copa Libertadores and win promotion back to the Brazilian top flight.
