New Flamengo signing Elias believes he has taken a step forward in his career by returning to Brazil, saying Flamengo are ‘one of the biggest clubs in the world’.

Elias, 27, who took part in his first training session on Friday before later being presented to the media, has joined the Rio de Janeiro giants on a season-long loan from Sporting Lisbon.

“In my opinion I have taken a step forward in my career,” Elias told reporters.

“Even having left Europe, I can play for one of the biggest clubs in the world. The Brasileirão is the second biggest tournament on the planet and it is an honour to wear this shirt.”

The midfielder will wear the number 8 shirt for Dorival Júnior’s team and thanked the fans for the support they have shown him since he was first linked with the move.

“First I want to thank the support of all the fans of Flamengo. I have received a lot of love.

“What else motivated me to come here is the size of the club. This board has done everything to bring me. I want to get back to playing well and to be able to return to Brazil squad,” he added.
