Fluminense had to rely on a late goal from Fred to salvage a draw against Vasco da Gama in the Campeonato Carioca on Saturday.
Vasco were looking to get back to winning ways at the Engenhão having lost their previous two games to Flamengo and Bangu.
It seemed like Vasco were going to seal the three points as the game entered its final stages, however, the reigning Brasileirão champions hit back through Fred.
The Seleção striker, who scored in Brazil’s 2-1 defeat to England on Wednesday, missed two early chances for Fluminense, which looked costly when Brazil teammate Jean turned the ball into his own net on the stroke of half-time.
However, the 29-year-old atoned for his early wastefulness by thumping an angled header past goalkeeper Alessandro following a pinpoint Carlinhos cross three minutes from time.
Fluminense coach Abel Braga said: “Fred missed two of the easier chances and scored from the most difficult.
“He has shown himself the great striker that he is. The cross was good but the header was difficult because he put the ball in the other direction.
“Only great players can do that. We are very happy to have the best forward in Brazil at our club.”
The dramatic point has maintained Flu’s unbeaten record in the competition, which they will be looking to extend when they face Volta Redonda on Sunday.
