São Paulo club doctor José Sanchez has confirmed on Tuesday morning that defender Paulo Miranda has undergone knee surgery and will be out of action for six weeks.
According to the doctor, the player required corrective treatment on the meniscus in his left knee, meaning that São Paulo will be without their first-choice right back for coming fixtures.
Primarily a centre-back, Paulo Miranda has become an important player since the arrival of manager Ney Franco at the Morumbi last season. Now, he often finds himself utilised at right-back to accommodate the surging forward runs of Cortez on the opposite flank.
Earlier, on SporTV’s Bem Amigos program, coach Ney Franco had indicated that his absence may require a change in strategy.
He said, “We have a problem with Paulo Miranda, who we still don’t know if he can undergo conservative treatment or will need surgery. I can lose my defensive left-back and maybe opt for a 3-5-2.”
