Former Santos midfielder Paulo Henrique Ganso has defended his former colleague Neymar following stinging criticism of the young forward from Brazilian icon Pelé in recent days.

According to the three-time World Cup winner, Neymar was appearing too much in the media and “cares more about his hairstyle and fashion than football”.

A close friend of the Santos forward, Ganso feels that the criticism is unfair given Neymar’s importance to Brazilian football and the national team. He believes, though, that Neymar will look to take the comments on board and look to learn from the recent controversy.

“Neymar is the best in Brazilian football—a genius with the ball,” Ganso contested. “It’s impossible for him not to be always in the media. But he has a very good head, he sometimes makes mistakes but tries to learn from them.

“He has a good family base and a calm outlook. He will learn from this. I think that he will always play well.”

Ganso, who is now plying his trade for São Paulo, has himself faced plenty of negative media coverage over the past twelve months but hopes to make the Brazil squad for the Confederations Cup in the country this summer.
