Portuguese footballing icon Luis Figo has backed calls for Benfica’s Brazilian striker Lima to be called up to his country’s national side.

Having played in Portugal since 2010, Lima is now eligible to play for the Portuguese national team and over the past couple of weeks has expressed an interest in switching allegiance to his adopted nation.

Former Portugal international Figo believes that, based of past examples of Brazilians to have played for his country in recent years, Lima should also be given the opportunity to impress.

“There is already precedent. I think Lima is within his rights to represent the national team,” Figo told A Bola, citing the examples of Deco, Pepe and Liedson as Brazilians who have made the sqitch.

Lima has scored on 19 goals for the Estadio da Luz side this season, continuing his impressive goalscoring feats following a €4.5 million move from Braga last summer.
