Granada full-back Guilherme Siqueira has confirmed to Brazilian media that he is the process of applying for Spanish citizenship with a view to representing his adopted nation.

Guilherme, 26, has been in Spain since 2010 having moved to Granada from sister club Udinese and revealed he has spoken to the Spanish management about the prospect.

Despite his prominence in the European game, Guilherme has never been called to the Brazilian national team and is looking at his options with a World Cup just 15 months away.

“Vicente del Bosque’s assistant with the national team, Toni Grande, said that if I can get Spanish nationality then I may be picked in the future as they’ve been watching me for a while,” he told Globo Esporte.

“Actually, I was very surprised by the news. I did not expect to be noticed by them, especially know they are well covered in the position.

“I have already sent all the paperwork to the consulate in Madrid. We are expecting that they could call at any moment to say that I have been granted citizenship. I hope it’s before June.”
