A late goal from right-back Rodrigo Caio secured São Paulo a 2-1 away victory over São Bernardo to help the Serie A side move three points clear at the top of Campeonato Paulista.

However, an own goal from Arsenal loanee Denilson brought the hosts level midway through the first half and looked to have denied São Paulo a ninth win in twelve state championship games until Rodrigo’s late intervention.

Palmeiras leapfrogged opponents Botafogo-SP into fourth place in the championship table on Wednesday night, thanks to two goals from on-loan forward Leandro.

The Grêmio owned Brazil Under-20 international was handed a starting opportunity after impressing in his initial substitute appearances and took just six minutes to repay his manager’s faith. He would go on to put the game to bed early in the second half.

Corinthians indifferent state championship form continued with a 1-1 draw against relegation threatened XV de Piricicaba, conceding a 88th minute equaliser to their unfancied opponents.

Having taken a 76th minute lead through Emerson Sheik, Tite and his side would not have envisaged throwing away their lead, but XV attacking midfielder Diguinho was on hand to shock the visitors in the game’s final moments.

Despite their woes, Corinthians look set to comfortably qualify for the championship playoffs at the end of the current round robin stage.
