Former Qatar manager Paulo Autuori has been appointed as the new coach of Vasco, replacing Gaúcho, who was sacked this week.

Paulo Autuori is a very successful manager, having won the Libertadores twice, as manager of Cruzeiro and São Paulo, as well as the Club World Cup in 2005.

The new Vasco manager has also won the Brazilian League in 1995, and has worked in Japan, Peru, Portugal and Qatar.

His most recent work in Brazil was in 2009, when he managed Grêmio, without achieving the same success he had at other clubs.

Paulo Autuori is bringing his own staff to Vasco, namely assistant manager Renê Weber and fitness coach Gilvan Santos. The new manager accepted to lower his salary demands to fit into Vasco’s financial situation.

Vasco also managed to keep director Ricardo Gomes, who threatened to leave after Gaúcho was sacked.

Paulo Autuori’s first game as the team’s new manager will be played next Wednesday when Vasco face Olaria for the Rio de Janeiro State League.
