Vasco midfielder Bernardo was kidnapped and beaten by a drugs gang earlier this month, reports have revealed, having started a relationship with the girlfriend of drug lord “Menor P”.
According to police investigations, both the player and the girl were stripped naked and beaten in the Vila do João favela. The girl, 23-year-old Dayana Rodrigues, was shot five times in the legs, while Bernardo was threatened with death.
It is said that Fluminense full-back Wellington Silva and Palmeiras midfielder Charles, both from the area, were called upon to ensure the safe release of Bernardo from his captivity.
Ms Rodrigues has since undergone surgery at the Ilha do Governador hospital, having suffered a broken tibia, but has since been released.
There are, though, conflicting reports on the incident, with the player’s mother insisting that he was not hurt or tortured during the incident.
It is expected that Bernardo will now testify against his assailants, with both Wellington Silva and Charles also expected to be called to give evidence.
Police reports suggest that the player was merely threatened and, upon admitting the relationship, was spared any injury. Ms Rodrigues, though, was not so fortunate.
