Grêmio striker Marcelo Moreno is edging closer to a move to Flamengo and the deal could be sealed before the end of this week, according to Lancenet.

Moreno, 25, has struggled for playing time this season after Grêmio coach Vanderlei Luxemburgo bought in Hernan Barcos and Eduardo Vargas to spearhead the tricolor’s attack to mount a serious challenge for this year’s Copa Libertadores.

Moreno had been willing to fight for his place at the Arena but it is now expected that he will have to move on to another club for regular football.

Talks with the Rio de Janeiro giants have been ongoing for the past three weeks but have been held up by the complex nature of the Bolivian’s contract with Grêmio.

It transpires that three clubs hold an interest in the rights to the player; with 30% belonging to Ukrainian club Shakhtar Donetsk and 70% belonging to Grêmio, but the Gaucho club will owe 15% to Palmeiras, as part of the deal to sign Hernan Barcos in January, if the move is made permanent.

This means that, once confirmed by Grêmio, Moreno will move to Flamengo, where he is expected to take a significant pay cut, on a loan deal until the end of the season with an exercise option included to make the deal permanent on a three year contract.
