Internacional forward Diego Forlán has praised his former coach Sir Alex Ferguson after he revealed he will step down as manager of Manchester United and retire from football at the end of the season.

The Uruguayan played for Ferguson between 2002 and 2004 after moving from Independiente, and while he struggled to adapt to playing for the English giants, he has fond memories of his former boss.

He told Lancenet: “I always say it is not good to compare, each has its own style. Each does their best. Manchester is a different situation because it’s a big club, but inside it looks small.

“Everyone knows everyone and it is kind of a family. It was very good; sometimes he (Ferguson) would go to the field and other times he would not. Had a lot of fun with it too and he had a lot of character.

“He was sometimes angry after a game, but he is a very good person and knew the player’s who came from South American football.”

Ferguson leaves Manchester United after 26 years once again as the champions of England. United announced on Thursday that Everton manager, and fellow Scot, David Moyes will take over next season, with the former Preston boss signing a six year deal at Old Trafford.
