Dani Alves dedicates Barcelona title win to Tito Vilanova and Eric Abidal
After Barcelona were crowned champions of Spain for the 22nd time on Saturday night, full-back Dani Alves dedicated the title to coach Tito Vilanova and defender Eric Abidal, both of whom have suffered from serious illness in the past year.
Barcelona, who face Atletico Madrid on Sunday, clinched the title without playing after rivals Real Madrid failed to beat Espanyol, drawing the game 1-1.
Despite winning back the La Liga title from Real Madrid, this has been a tough season for the Catalan giants, their first in the post-Pep Guardiola era, with the club rocked by the illnesses to Vilanova, who suffered a relapse of cancer of the parotid gland, and to Abidal, who had to undergo a liver transplant because of a tumour.
Alves dedicated the title to the pair by posting a picture on Twitter with the words:
“Congratulations to all colleagues for the championship, especially those in the photo! This is for you Tito and Abi."
