Grêmio have dismissed rumors that Chilean winger Eduardo Vargas could leave the club following the club’s defeat in Copa Libertadores.

It had been speculated that he would return to Napoli as Grêmio are likely to revamp the squad for the rest of the Brazilian football season.

But Grêmio’s executive director of football Rui Costa has ruled out this possibility, he told Rádio Guaíba: “Grêmio have no interest at all in sending Eduardo Vargas back to Napoli.”

“What can happen is that, by contract, Napoli can call him back, since we were eliminated in Copa Libertadores. But in my opinion he is one of the team’s best players and we have no reason to send him back.”

Eduardo Vargas was blamed by fans for wasting too many opportunities in key Copa Libertadores games, including a chance to score the equalizer against Santa Fe near the end of the game.
