Santos begin their quest to replace Neymar by entering the bidding for Wolfsburg’s attacking midfielder Diego.

Spanish club Atlético Madrid had been the favourites to sign the player, but have had a €5 million bid turned down according to reports.

Diego spent the 2011-12 season on loan with Atlético, but financial barriers meant they couldn’t make the move permanent.

Whether Santos are willing to stump up the cash for the transfer plus Diego’s considerable yearly wage, remains to be seen, but they are likely to have a bit of cash lying around post-Neymar.

The Santos fans will be expecting at least one high profile signing to replace their outgoing star, and their club are also rumoured to be interested in another former Santos favourite, Robinho, who is currently at Milan.

At the age of 28, Diego still has plenty to offer almost any side in world football, and while many fans believe he should be a regular choice in the national team, he hasn’t represented the Seleção since 2008, which is something he will be looking to change at his next club.
