Arsenal have announced the departure of left-back André Santos who has returned to his homeland with Flamengo.

The Brazilian made just 33 appearances for Arsenal over two years and has joined the Rubro-Negro midway in their Brasileirão campaign.

The left-back was much maligned in his final days at Arsenal after turning in a series of poor performances, causing the fans to turn on the player.

Santos cancelled his contract with Arsenal, despite early reports that he would join Flamengo on a one-year loan deal. The left-back will own 50% of his own rights, while Flamengo will own the rest.

The negotiations advanced quickly as the international transfer window in Brazil closed yesterday at midnight.

As part of the agreement, Flamengo are expected to let either João Paulo or Ramón leave the club, in order to reduce squad numbers.

Santos has previously worked with current Flamengo manager Mano Menezes at Corinthians and the pair will now be reunited.
