Fluminense striker Fred handed four-match ban
Fluminense striker Fred has been handed a four-match suspension for elbowing Vasco da Gama’s Jomar during his side’s 3-1 defeat last month.
The Brazil international who scored two goals in the 3-0 Confederations Cup final win over Spain, was shown a straight red card in the 25th minute of the match.
And a Rio de Janeiro sports tribunal found on Friday that the 29-year-old had acted recklessly in the challenge and will miss another three games.
"I am upset with the sentence, which in my vision was extremely harsh," Fred said after the hearing.
"I have seen incidents that were a lot worse that didn't receive this type of punishment."
The striker missed Flu's 2-0 defeat to Grêmio last Sunday, and will now be unavailable for games against Ponte Preta, Vitória and Flamengo this month.
Fluminense have confirmed that the club will appeal the decision, with coach Vanderlei Luxemburgo also without suspended midfielder Diguinho and injured playmaker Deco for Sunday's game.
