Shakhtar Donetsk sign Atlético Mineiro star Bernard for €25m
Shakhtar Donetsk have announced the signing of Atlético Mineiro star Bernard for €25 million (£21.5m).
The Brazil international has been strongly linked with a move to Europe all summer, but did not want to consider his future until after the Confederations Cup and Mineiro’s Copa Libertadores campaign, both of which he walked away from as a champion.
Bernard was strongly linked with moves to Premier League sides Tottenham and Arsenal, while his father and agent had both appeared to be holding out for a move to Porto, after Hulk had spoken highly to the 20-year-old about his former club.
However, Minerio president Alexandre Kalil had stated on several occasions that Shakhtar were the only side to meet his asking price and Bernard has now penned a five-year contract at the Donbass Arena.
Bernard, who scored seven goals in 25 appearances for Minerio during 2013, will wear the number ten shirt at his new club.
The Ukrainian outfit have an abundance of Brazilian players on their books, with Bernard becoming the fourth player to make the switch from Brazil just this transfer window.
Shakhtar have already completed the signings of Wellington Nem from Fluminense for €9m, Grêmio’s Fernando in a deal worth €11m and Fred from Internacional for €15m.
Luiz Adriano, Maicon, Douglas Costa, Alan Patrick, Taison, Alex Teixeira, Ismaily and Ilsinho are also at the club.
