Seleção legend Gylmar passes away
Legendary Seleção goalkeeper Gylmar has passed away after an heart attack in his home at São Paulo.
Gylmar was an ever present in the legendary Brazil teams that won the World Cup in 1958 and 1962, playing alongside fellow legends such as Garrincha and Pele.
The former Santos and Corinthians keeper suffered a heart attack last weekend failed to fully recover from his illness which lasted several years following a stroke.
Brazilian broadcaster and journalist Juca Kfouri hailed the former goalkeeper, citing him as the 'greatest of all time'.
"No Brazilian goalkeeper was ever like Gylmar dos Santos Neves,” Kfouri said. “And none ever will be."
Gylmar began his career at Jabaquara, a small club in his home town of Santos, but he was quickly snapped up by Corinthians.
He then played for São Paulo from 1951-61, having the dubious honour of conceding Pele's first ever professional goal.
