Australia injury sidelines Real Madrid defender Marcelo
After limping off in Brazil’s 6-0 victory against Australia on Saturday, reports suggest Marcelo could now miss up to three games for Real Madrid.
The full-back had to be replaced by Maxwell in the first half and is believed to have suffered a thigh strain.
He is definitely unavailable for the Seleção’s fixture with Portugal on Wednesday morning and will be assessed by medical staff today to ascertain the damage. The early prognosis is that the 25 year-old will be out for two weeks.
That would leave him unavailable for Real Madrid’s next La Liga game away to Villarreal, as well as their Champions League opener against Galatasaray. The defender may also miss the Madrid derby with Getafe, but should return ahead of the trip to Elche.
Given the loss of Marcelo, Real Madrid coach Carlo Ancelotti will be relieved that Fábio Coentrão didn’t complete his expected loan switch to Manchester United. The 54 year-old would have been left with just Nacho Fernández as his only recognised left full-back.
Marcelo has played every minute for Real Madrid so far this season, with Los Merengues still unbeaten after three games.
